Demme Learning’s time-honored and research-based principles

Our philosophy of learning is built on time-honored and research-based foundational principles of education. These principles address the nature of the learner, the nature of learning, and the nature of instructional design.

Each individual learner has a unique learning style and developmental pace. We believe that curriculum should be organized into levels so that students can be placed and proceed according to individual ability. Instruction is conducted individually or in small groups to achieve the maximum amount of growth for each student.

Adults play essential roles in a child’s ongoing development and learning. While professional teachers may guide students’ instructional programs, we recognize that engaged parents are crucial to children’s success. The parent’s role may be as the primary instructor or as a supplemental instructor in their child’s education.

Students learn best when they understand the concepts underlying processes and procedures. At every level and in every subject, we support curricula that emphasize the development of conceptual understanding so that students are able to think fluently about a subject while accurately and effectively applying learned concepts.

Students should master fundamental skills and concepts before acquiring new ones. Our family of products provides extensive opportunities for practice and review, and require that each student demonstrate mastery and fluency before moving on to a new concept.

Educators and researchers have long recognized the value of using manipulatives in instruction. Our manipulatives are integral components of our instruction and are designed to help students develop concrete understandings of concepts and build conceptual connections. Our goal is to provide a balanced approach by encouraging students to explore concepts under direct adult guidance, with opportunities for instructor modeling and explicit instruction. In this way, students use both inductive and deductive reasoning to increase their understanding and experience success.

Demme Learning had its beginning in the late 80s.

Steve Demme, a successful teacher who has taught in public and private schools, as well as higher education, was asked to teach math to a homeschool co-op in Massachusetts.

1980sIn the early 1980s Steve Demme was a schoolteacher and the pastor of a small congregation in Georgia. Steve has always been passionate about helping people understand difficult concepts and promoting a lifelong love of learning.

As Steve and his wife Sandi started their family, they heard about the concept of home education and began pursuing it as an option for their children.

In the late 1980s the Demme Family moved to Massachusetts where Steve continued to teach and began tutoring and training parents and teachers on methods of teaching math.

1990sAs a successful teacher who taught in public and private schools as well as higher education, Steve Demme was asked to teach math to a homeschool co-op in Massachusetts.

Steve combined his knowledge of curriculum with his experience as a teacher and taught the students once a week using a multi-sensory skill-based approach.

He developed worksheets for the students to take home and practice what they had learned with their parents. When approached by parents who asked to purchase the materials for the course, Demme began producing and selling the workbook and provided training sessions for parents on his instruction methods.

As interest grew, one course grew into a full math curriculum, including the distinctive integer blocks and video lessons, and Math-U-See was born.

2000sAs demand continued to grow, the company did likewise. The focus was initially on the rapidly expanding homeschool market, but success in intervention and special education classrooms led to expansion into schools and small group learning environments. Enhancements continued and the levels developed into the current complete K-12 math curriculum.

2010sAs the family grew and the second generation began starting their own families, Steve and Sandi’s sons became more involved in the operation of Math-U-See. In 2012 they completed a family business transition from the first to the second generation, with Ethan Demme being selected by the board as the new President and CEO of Demme Learning. Steve and Sandi moved to roles on the board and Steve increased his focus on developing additional resources for “Building Faith Families.”

Demme Learning’s focus continues to be on building lifelong learning and is committed to providing the best educational materials possible for parents, teachers, and students.
