Can a Student Work Independently in Spelling You See?

The amount of time the parent actually needs to spend at the student’s side will depend on the level of Spelling You See and on the maturity of the student.

Parental interest and involvement are critical to learning in all subject areas. The amount of time the parent actually needs to spend at the student’s side will depend on the level of Spelling You See and on the maturity of the student. No matter how mature the student, you should always be ready to give all the help that is needed for success.

Listen and Write must be completed side-by-side with the student as the instructor monitors the formation of letters and dictates the words to be written. However, the entire lesson requires only about 10 minutes.

Jack and Jill is a transitional level. In Book 1, students will need help with reading the passage and finding the elements to be marked. There will also be words to dictate each day. As students progress to Book 2, they may be able to work more independently in marking and copywork, but the instructor should still be closely involved. Once a week, the instructor will dictate the passage, which should not take more than 10 minutes.

As the student moves through the levels and becomes a more accomplished reader and more familiar with the Spelling You See system of marking letter patterns, you will find that they will naturally begin to work more independently. The student will still be expected to read each passage aloud to the instructor, and the instructor should continue to monitor the student’s work. Depending on the level, the passage will be dictated once or twice a week.
