Adapting to the Updated Format in Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics

Do you remember the first time you bought a smartphone? While the device featured a new interface and many useful features, it took some getting used to. For many of our customers who are familiar with the traditional Math-U-See program, Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (PSM) can feel that way too.

Ultimately, this comprehensive program was built with you in mind. It includes an updated lesson structure, new video instruction, guided notes, and a broader scope of topics to prepare your student for the mathematical journey ahead.

If you’re having trouble adjusting to the new format, here are a few tips that will help.

Tip #1: Take Advantage of the Bridge Materials

The most important piece of advice we can give you and your student is to access and use the Bridge Materials.

We developed the new Algebra 1 level first, with the plan to work both directions developing additional levels from that starting place. That means that we understand and acknowledge that, for the time being, there is a gap in content between our current Pre-Algebra and PSM.

The Bridge Materials were developed for exactly this reason. Even after we are able to offer updated content at the pre-algebra level, the Bridge Materials will continue to be promoted as a starting place for anyone who will use PSM. They include a free Readiness Check and a set of skills lessons to “bridge the gap” between Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1: PSM levels of Math-U-See. You can learn more about the Bridge Materials and how to access them here

Tip #2: Patience and Time

The second greatest piece of advice we can give you and your student is to have patience. Patience with yourselves and each other. Patience with the new curriculum.

We found that during our PSM curriculum pilot program, every family experienced some level of initial frustration related to how different the PSM curriculum is from their previous Math-U-See experiences. You are not alone! We anticipated this response.

However, what we also found was that after Unit 1, students and instructors began to adapt to the rhythm of lesson structure, content, and instructor. Keep in mind…It’s only new the first time. We are confident that after a few lessons, with patience, you will adapt as well.

Here are some more specific tips regarding patience and time:

  • Be open to changing and adapting your learning schedule.
    • What worked for the previous math levels may not be the best approach with PSM.
    • Allow for some experimentation and trial and error until you and your student find what works best for you.
  • Encourage students as they adjust to taking and using notes.
    • A goal of PSM is to help students learn key mathematical language and concepts.
    • Positively remind students to use their notes to get through places where they struggle.
    • Praise their efforts when they effectively use them to get through a difficult problem.
  • PSM has a substantial amount of new content. The increase in the learning, rigor, and difficulty will be an adjustment for most students.

We’re confident that your choice to educate your student using PSM will be a rewarding one. If you’re still having difficulty getting into the groove or have specific questions, our team is here to help. You can reach Customer Service during regular business hours at 888-854-6284.
