Getting Started with AIM: Addition and Subtraction

Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM): Addition and Subtraction is a solution for students eight years old and older who struggle with basic math fact recall. This guide will help you prepare for your first lesson and get you started on the right path to understanding and math fact mastery.

  • First, open the box and remove the materials.
  • Next, redeem the Online Instruction with Video (formerly known as Digital Pack) Code to gain access to the digital materials in the Digital Toolbox, or our Early Access experience on our new platform. If you need help or are unsure how to redeem your code, check out this article.
  • Via Digital Toolbox: Navigate to AIM Addition and Subtraction (My Online Instruction with Video(s) → AIM Multiplication → AIM for Success).
  • Via Early Access: Navigate to AIM Addition and Subtraction (Dashboard → Library → AIM Addition and Subtraction → AIM for Success–Getting Started)
  • Watch the Video: How to Administer the Assessment (2:24 minutes).
  • Complete the BeforeAIM Assessment with your student. The Assessment button is below and to the right of the main video and can be printed from the Digital Toolbox (Lesson 1). It can also be found on pages 5–7 in the Resource Guide.
  • Watch the following AIM For Success Videos. (Approximately 18 minutes, total)
    • Welcome and Overview (6:13 minutes)
    • The Build Write Say Method (4:36 minutes)
    • Fading From the Manipulatives (3:26 minutes)
    • Mastery Check (3:12 minutes)
  • Read pages 8-23 in the Resource Guide. Place a bookmark on pages 14-19, as you will be referring back to those pages as you go through the lessons.
  • Watch the Video for Lesson 1
  • Read the Instructions for Lesson 1 in the Resource Guide.
  • Now you are ready to watch the video with your child and begin practicing that concept.

Note: Lesson times may vary. Lesson One usually takes less time as it focuses on learning the block colors and their values. Other lessons may take as long as two weeks or more. AIM was developed to work for your student in the timeline they need to be successful. Stay focused on mastery, not how long a lesson “should” be taking.
