My student says that they cannot identify any knotty words or that they don’t find any of the words challenging.

Collaborate closely with your student during your Daily Huddle to establish an effective practice. While students may struggle to predict which words they’ll find challenging in dictation, you can guide them. As their instructor, you have a clearer understanding of their past difficulties. Proactively select a few words each week, saying, “Let’s focus on [these words] because [reasons].” This focused approach allows students to concentrate without the pressure of self-selection. After modeling for a couple of weeks, gradually release control. For instance, students can start by pointing out one knotty word while you point out a couple of others.

Dictation is another valuable indicator of progress. If your student completes dictations smoothly without needing prompts for corrections, they’re likely using the visual spelling process. This is excellent! Keep practicing dictations word-by-word to reinforce their success. Remember, the chunking, copywork, and dictation routines are all designed to work together to ensure continued success.
