If I’ve Completed Algebra 1: PSM, What Should I Do Next?

Congratulations on completing Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (Algebra 2: PSM)! Now that your student has built a strong conceptual foundation in Algebra 1, you have several flexible options for their next step in the Math-U-See series.

The Algebra 2: PSM Sequence

Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (Algebra 2: PSM) was specifically designed to be the direct successor to Algebra 1: PSM. Because of this unique design, the transition is smoother than moving into other upper-level courses.

Option 1: Move Directly to Algebra 2: PSM

Many families choose to move directly from Algebra 1 to Algebra 2.

  • No Geometry Required: A full year of high school Geometry is not a prerequisite for Algebra 2: PSM.
  • Seamless Transition: The course continues the same instructional philosophy and reasoning-based pedagogy your student used in Algebra 1: PSM.
  • Readiness Support: If you choose this path but want to ensure your student is fully prepared, you can use the Readiness & Review for Algebra 2 materials to shore up critical concepts before diving into Unit 1.

Option 2: Complete Geometry First

While not required, some families prefer the traditional high school sequence of Algebra 1, then Geometry, then Algebra 2.

  • Flexible Order: You may choose to take a year of Geometry before starting Algebra 2: PSM without any issue.
  • Retention: Because Algebra 2: PSM includes robust review materials, your student can easily refresh their Algebra 1 skills even after a year away from the subject.

Option 3: Algebra 2: Legacy

If your student prefers the traditional Math-U-See format they may have used in levels prior to Algebra 1: PSM, they could transition to our Algebra 2: Legacy course. However, please note that Algebra 2: PSM is the recommended continuation for those using the PSM line as it maintains the same rigorous, standards-based approach.

Which Path is Right for You?

To help you decide, we recommend the following:

  • Assess Readiness: Use the Readiness Check provided in the Algebra 2 Readiness & Review materials to see how much of the Algebra 1 material your student has retained.
  • Consider Your Goals: Algebra 2: PSM is a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum designed to prepare students for college-level math and higher-level learning.
