What a Week Looks Like in Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics

Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (Algebra 2: PSM) is designed to fit the rhythm of your educational journey while challenging students with higher-level algebraic concepts. Because this course is delivered online and focuses on deep conceptual understanding, “a week” may look different than what you experienced in previous levels.

Things to Remember

  • Sequential Learning: Math is learned in a specific order. It is essential to build a strong foundation in one concept before moving to the next lesson.
  • Flexibility & Pace: The program is student-paced to allow for the processing of complex information. No lesson is designed to be completed in a single day.
  • The Learning Curve: Your student shouldn’t expect to know everything on day one. Making mistakes is a vital part of the learning process.
  • Variable Lesson Length: Some lessons may be mastered quickly, while others—due to the complexity of the objectives—will require more time.

What Does a Week Look Like?

The goal for each lesson is that students achieve mastery by completing, at minimum:

  • Warm Up: A brief activity to prepare the mind for the lesson.
  • Explore Section: Watching online videos while recording notes, examples, and completing Checkpoints.
  • Practice 1: Focused practice on the lesson’s specific objectives.
  • Mastery Check: An opportunity for the student to “show and say” what they have learned.

How Much Time Should We Spend on Algebra 2: PSM Each Day?

Instead of traditional “days,” Algebra 2: PSM uses the concept of Learning Sessions to measure progress.

  • The 45-Minute Rule: We recommend one learning session of 45 minutes of focused study per day.
  • Lesson Duration: On average, it will likely take 2–4 learning sessions to complete a single lesson.
  • Weekly Rhythm: Depending on the student, a typical week (5 days) might cover one full lesson and a portion of the next, or one full lesson plus a Targeted Review or Test.

Things to Remember When Planning Your Week

  • Respect Focus Limits: An average teenager’s ability to focus ranges from 32 to 50 minutes. Stop the session when your student reaches the 45-minute mark, even if they are in the middle of a lesson section.
  • Adaptable Assessments: Targeted Reviews follow odd-numbered lessons, and Tests follow even-numbered lessons. If a week feels too heavy, Targeted Reviews can be completed outside of the standard 45-minute learning session to keep the momentum going.
