How to Know Algebra 2: PSM is Right for Your Student

Choosing the next step in your student’s mathematical journey is an important decision. Algebra 2: Principles of Secondary Mathematics (Algebra 2: PSM) is a rigorous, concept-driven course designed to build directly upon the foundations laid in Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics.

To ensure your student is ready for success in this advanced level, please review the following requirements and recommendations.

1. Confirm the Prerequisite

The primary requirement for entering this course is the successful completion of a high-quality Algebra 1 curriculum.

  • Required Prerequisite: Students must have completed Algebra 1: Principles of Secondary Mathematics or another Algebra 1 course with a similar scope and sequence.
  • Important Note on Legacy Courses: Math-U-See’s Algebra 1: Legacy course is not a sufficient prerequisite for Algebra 2: PSM.
  • What About Geometry? A full year of high school Geometry is not a prerequisite for this course. Algebra 2: PSM is specifically designed to follow Algebra 1: PSM, whether or not your student has taken Geometry in between.

2. Review Readiness Resources

Before making a final decision, we highly recommend utilizing our placement and review tools to gauge your student’s current mastery of essential Algebra 1 concepts.

  • Placement Tools: Review our Placement Resources to confirm that Algebra 2: PSM is the appropriate next level for your learner.
  • Readiness & Review for Algebra 2: This specialized review material is designed to evaluate student readiness and shore up critical concepts before starting the full course.
    • The Readiness Check functions as a pre-test to identify specific gaps in your student’s knowledge.
    • Based on those results, students can complete targeted Review Lessons to ensure they have the necessary skills for a successful start in Algebra 2.

3. Is Your Student Ready for a Digital-First Experience?

Algebra 2: PSM is delivered digitally. Before enrolling, ensure your learning environment meets the following criteria:

  • Internet Access: A stable broadband connection (50 Mbps or higher) is recommended for viewing video content.
  • Printing Capabilities: Because the course is online, instructors will need to print the student Lesson Pages and Tests.
  • Independent Learning: The course promotes independent study with the instructor acting as a “guide-on-the-side”.
